Medium plus to full intensity this is inky, with gorgeous violet reflections, grilled oak on the nose, intense but has good construction and a sense of reserve, Espresso and charred coffee bean, along with cassis and blueberry, silky, concentrated, appellation typicity, and a ton of personality. The 2023 Feytit-Clinet is fabulous. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of blue/black fruit, gravel, chocolate, scorched earth, lavender and liquified rocks. Feytit-Clinet is often a rich, structured Pomerol, but in 2023, the tannins are totally woven into the wine's fabric, making for a wine that marries power with finesse. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2023 will see 14-15 months in oak—70% new and 30% once-used barrels. Yields were a healthy 42 hectoliters per hectare. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 93-95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2024)
A nice concentration of fruit is the focus on the nose of this barrel sample, a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, with crushed blackberry and layers of coffee bean and sweet dark chocolate. This is matched by an appealing, softly polished core of texture which characterises the start and middle of the palate, with a rich grip of tightly knit tannins. A modest but appealing depth, but still very much showing the sinew and drive of the vintage, with threads of blackberry, toast, dark chocolate and slate, set over the grip and fresh acidity. But it has texture too, lifting this above many other wines in this vintage, before it finishes in a firm and convincing style. An attractive Feytit-Clinet this year, with texture, cohesion and grip. Tasted three times. Rating: 93-95 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Feytit-Clinet has a delightful bouquet that is subtle at first but coheres nicely, beautifully defined with black cherries, violets and truffle scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a deft touch of dark chocolate on the entry. It’s well-structured and firm in the mouth, but there is elegance here and a tender, persistent finish. This is another in a string of successful wines for the Chasseuil family estate. It’s on par with last year's wine. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2024)
Château Feytit Clinet
Jérémy Chasseuil took this property in hand in 2000, and the wines have got better with every passing vintage, truly showing the potential of this tiny 6.5 hectare property, set right in the heart of Pomerol (close to Clinet, Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol). It's on gravelly-sandy and clay soils and planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with vines that average over 30 years old. Despite the name, and the statement "mis en bouteille au chateau" on the label, there is no château, just a small well-equipped chai.
The grapes are hand-picked before fermentation in concrete and steel vats, where they spend four or five weeks before the wine is run off for the malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine is aged for around 18 months is up to 80% new oak barrels.
