Deep ruby, blackberry and raspberry fruits, cocoa bean, espresso, juicy and intensely spice, needs more nuance to throw into relief the grilled oak. Drinking range: 2029 - 2042 Rating: 90 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Fombrauge is terrific. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2023 packs a serious punch. There's plenty of the textural richness Bernard Magrez loves, but it’s just a bit tempered compared to previous years. Succulent red cherry, plum, rose petal, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha infuse the 2023 with notable depth. Bright acids refresh the palate nicely. Tasted four times. Drinking range: 2027 - 2043 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, picked at a yield of 49 hl/ha, vinified in oak and stainless steel vats. A beautiful nose, expressive and open, with powdered chalk, leather, peony and red summer fruits, in particular ripe strawberry with a dusting of black pepper. The oak is playing a big part here. The palate is fresh, lively, with a very tense and sinewy style, very correct, with tightly wound tannins, supporting layers of leather, degraded red cherry, sandalwood, incense and peony. There is plenty of grip here, the tannins providing a very robust frame for the fruit, and showing a great deal of confidence in the finish. An impressive structure which doesn’t go over the top, and with time these tannins will integrate. This has certainly moved away from the dark engine-oil style I would expect to find here in the past, although the oak is still there, and the alcohol is still high at 14.75%. Tasted three times. Rating: 90-92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
This has a creamy texture with round tannins, very attractive ripe fruit and a juicy finish of blackberry and chocolate. Medium to full body. More balanced than 2022? Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)
Château Fombrauge
Chateau Fombrauge is the largest St. Emilion vineyard with over 128 acres. The Bordeaux wine vineyard is planted to 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 30 years of age and are planted to a density of 5,600 vines per hectare. Owned by Bernard Magrez and consulted by Michel Rolland, this Right Bank property strives to produce the best Bordeaux wine possible. Cold macerations, 4-5 week fermentations in small wood vats are some of the techniques employed by the property. Close to 14,000 cases are produced in most vintages. The estate has a second wine, Le Cadran de Fombrauge which produces over 100,000 bottles of this Bordeaux wine per year.
