One of those benchmark estates that rise above the individual character of the year, imposing their own personality that remains true to itself. Good texture here, enjoyable depth and balance, peony floral character, cocoa bean and slate, with tannins that give sinew and tension to the palate. Good stuff, will age. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Gazin is deep, layered and exceptionally well-balanced. All the elements are in the right place. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and dried herbs all meld together in a seamless, super-expressive Pomerol that hints at a very bright future. This is a fine follow up to the 2022. Drinking range: 2030 - 2043 Rating: 91-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2024)

I find sweet blackcurrant fruits on the nose, layered with smoke, black pepper and liquorice, on the nose of the 2023 Gazin. The palate follows this rather promising start with layers of sweet black fruits, white peach, peony and thyme, underpinned by ripe tannins which pervade the palate and persist into the finish. Lots of rich character here, with the salty fruit confidence of the vintage, and fine grip. This is an impressive showing for Gazin, and makes this an interesting prospect for the cellar. Tasted twice. Rating: 93-95 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

Revealing aromas of dark berries, cassis and cherries, the 2023 Gazin is medium to full-bodied, firm and compact, with a dense core of fruit framed by chewy tannins. Rating: 88-90 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)

Château Gazin

It is said that Château Gazin occupies the site of an old Knights of St John hospital that tended to pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostella - a legend that is reflected in the cross on the label and in the name of the second wine, l'Hospitalet de Gazin. During the 19th Century, Gazin was one of the most highly regarded estates in Pomerol. The Bailliencourt family came into the estate by marriage in the early years of the 20th Century but, sadly, their tenure has mostly been of a château in decline. However, the estate's inheritance by the dynamic Nicolas de Bailliencourt in the 1980's has completely turned Gazin around and, once again, it is one of the châteaux to watch. The machine harvesters, bought as recently as 1979, were disposed of, a new chais was built, the second wine was introduced to allow stricter selection for the grand vin, and the services of Pomerol guru Jean-Pierre Moueix were engaged. The wine is typically 90% Merlot and spends 18 months in barrique, of which 50% are new wood.
