71 Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot: 65% new oak for 16 months: 13.2% alc: 3.69 pH: 87 IPT Haut-Batailley continues its new lease of life under Cazes (Lynch-Bages) ownership, and this is a highly polished, extraordinarily exuberant and marvellously glossy wine.  Deeply fruited, with a core of chocolate and black plums, this modern style has fine-grained tannins and a long, spicy finish with masses of traction coming from both fruit and oak.  Haut-Batailley has never looked so eye-catching and glamorous. Delivering elegance and finesse, this showcases why Haut-Batailley is so different in personality from Lynch Bages in this stable of wines, with a fragrant violet and peony note that takes it almost into St Julien, while slowly building the tannins that root it in Pauillac. Smoke, campfire and slate mix with blackberry and bilberry fruits. 65% new oak for ageing Drinking range: 2029 - 2046 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Haut-Batailley is another impressive wine from this Chateau. There's plenty of the typical dark fruit and overall breadth that is such a signature, but the tannins show greater finesse than in some prior years—a very positive evolution that continues here. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves, leather and licorice are all beautifully amplified. The 2023 marks another major step forward for Haut-Batailley. Drinking range: 2028 - 2043 Rating: 93-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

This is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the latter from young vines which made it into the grand vin for the first time. This feels immediately convincing on the nose, not that common in this vintage, with dark and convincing crystalline fruits, laced with black pepper and tar. The palate takes it up a notch with a really charming texture, with a juicy and lightly creamed body of fruit wrapped loosely around a spindle of firm tannins. Juicy, bright, open and expressive, this culminates in a finish of rich grip and peppery tannins. This shows rather well, with a cohesive substance and plenty of peppery grip, and the powdery substance of a fine vintage. Good potential here. Tasted three times. The alcohol is 13.2% on analysis. Château Haut Batailley

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 For most of its history Château Haut Batailley, as the name suggests, was part of Château Batailley. The name "Batailley" appears to be derived from a battle that occured on the sight in 1453 during the Hundred Years War. During the early 19th Century, Batailley was owned by Daniel Guestier who did much to raise the reputation of the estate such that it was rated a 5th Growth in the 1855 classification. Batailley was purchased in 1932 by Marcel and François Borie who divided the estate between themselves in 1942, with Marcel taking the half that retained the Batailley name and François developing Haut Batailley. In 2017 Château Haut Batailley was purchased by the Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch Bages. The two Batailleys are in the south of Pauillac, a little way inland from the Pichons. The 22ha of Haut Batailley is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Haut Batailley has a good reliable reputation, offering very decent "drinking" claret at competitive prices.
