Violets and gunsmoke swirl upwards out of the glass, setting the scene for a sterling vintage at Jean Faure. Delicately boned, sappy blue fruit, this seduces slowly but surely, fantastic balance and fully showcasing the potential of Cabernet Franc in the vintage. Often this wine is austere and needs time when tasting En Primeur, but the fragrance and the finesse is already on full display. Brilliant stuff. 30% new oak for ageing, along with 25% oak casks, 15% concrete eggs; 30% one year old oak barrels. Rating: 96 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Jean Faure is a very distinctive Saint-Émilion driven by a high percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend. Dense and explosive in the glass, the 2023 saturates the palate with waves of inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather and licorice. Ripeness feels a bit pushed to the limit, but finding the right time to pick Franc is rarely easy. Drinking range: 2030 - 2043 Rating: 91-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Jean Faure has turned out beautifully this year, bursting with aromas of mulberries, rose petals, iris and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, it's seamless and enveloping, with real mid-palate plenitude, supple tannins and a long, delicately minty finish. It's a blend of fully 65% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)

A young red with blackberry, dark cherry and some fresh herbs, in a very good sense. Medium body, integrated tannins and a polished and attractive finish. Really pretty fruit here. Picked al-dente. Better than 2022? Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)

Château Jean Faure

Château Jean Faure was bought by Olivier Decelle (who had already acquired the Maury, 'Mas Amiel' by then) in 2004. This ended a dark period in the property's history, since it had lost its position as a 'Grand Cru Classé' in 1985, thanks to bad management at the time. A long period of investment and restructuring followed. The vineyard oof 18 hectares, being partly on a similar gravel to its near neighbour Cheval Blanc, is composed of 56% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 6% Malbec. The property has now regained its 'classé' rank. The wine is aged for eighteen months, one third in concrete, and two thirds in barrels, 60% new, and 40% one year old.
