The 2023 Latour-Martillac Blanc is a tense, steel dry white. Lemon peel, chalk, white pepper, sage, mint and crushed rocks lend brightness and energy. I like the vibrancy here, but I just wish there was a bit more mid-palate creaminess. At this stage, the Blanc is a bit austere. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2027 - 2035 Rating: 89-91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
A beautifully confident set of aromatics here, with salted green apple, crushed chalk minerals, white freesia, acacia and white pepper. This confident aromatic profile translates into a palate of light velvet, supported by a frame of fresh phenolics and bright, welcome acidity. This results in a crisp, driven, energetic style, with brisk acidity, leading into a charged finish. A delicious Latour-Martillac in this vintage, which looks well set for the cellar. Rating: 93-95 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Blanc from Latour Martillac reveals aromas of confit citron, lime, lime tree leaves, herbs and spices, followed by a juicy, round and layered palate framed by bright acids and a mouthwatering finish with delicate smoky hints. This blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon was matured 20% in new oak barrels. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 89-91 Yohan Castaing, www.robertparker.com (Apr 2024)
Château Latour Martillac
The 'tour' of the estate's name is a tower that stands in the main courtyard of the estate - it is all that remains of a 12th century fort. The rest of the fort was demolished and the stones used to built the château sometime in the 18th century. A Bordeaux wine merchant, Edouard Kressmann, purchased the estate in 1871 and the Kressmann family own and run it to this day. In 1930, the striking art-deco inspired label was created. Also in 1930, the word 'Martillac' was appended to the name to avoid confusion with any other Château Latours there might be. They produce both red and white Pessac-Léognan, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot vines being grown on the slightly higher gravel soils of the Martillac plateau above the château and Merlot, Sauvignon and Semillon growing on the clay/limestone land nearer the River Garonne.
