Grapes | Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot |
Colour | Red |
Origin | France, Bordeaux |
Sub-district | Haut Médoc |
Village | Margaux |
Classification | 4ème Cru Classé |
Glass-staining rich plum colour, this has clear structure and concentration, very much classic Left Bank in its fruit chracter and tannic grip, good balance, enjoyable, austere right now but will fill out through the mid palate over ageing, and has fennel and black pepper spice to round things off with a punch. This year includes the Marojallia vines for the first time. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Marquis de Terme is a dense, powerful Margaux. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, espresso and cloves are all amplified, lending the 2023 tons of textural volume and richness. All the elements are so well balanced. This is a fine vintage for Marquis de Terme, a wine that has improved markedly in recent years. Tasted three times. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
This is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, picked at a yield of 44 hl/ha. I find a rather dense nose of perfumed fruit here, slightly soft in its focus in what is generally a brightly defined vintage, with red cherry, peony and fragrant wild flowers intertwined with confident veins of toasted oak. The palate presents a rather open, juicy and delicate composition, with red fruits, bright cherries, sandalwood, rose petals and black pepper notes, the style juicy and fresh with dark and saline fruits, but also some good texture. Lots of firm grip here, leading to a sappy finish with fading tannin. This has nice elegant potential. Tasted twice. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
Lovely young wine here with a pretty core of berry fruit and bark undertones. Medium body. Crisp, fine and lightly chewy tannins at the end. Quite seamless. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)
Château Marquis de Terme
Château Marquis de Terme was once part of an enormous estate that took in Rauzan-Segla, Rauzan-Gassies and Desmirail too, but by the time François de Peguilham Marquis de Terme came to own it in 1762 the estate had broken up into the four constituents we know today. The Marquis gave his name to the estate, an aristocratic name that survived the Revolution. Along the way, Thomas Jefferson came to visit and praised the wines in his diary. At the 1855 classification, Marquis de Terme was awarded 4th Growth status. Marquis de Terme was purchased, in 1935, by the Sénéclauze family who own it today. Château Marquis de Terme sits in the village of Margaux, with Durfort-Vivens next door and the two Rauzans immediately to its south. Of the 39.5ha of vineyard, 60% are Cabernet Sauvignon all planted on fairly typical Médoc gravel soil, whilst the more clay parts of the estate are given over to Merlot, with a small planting of Petit Verdot. Vines average around 35 years old. Ever with an eye to the future, Marquis de Terme have been experimenting with organic viticulture; and they age a small proportion of their wine in concrete “eggs” to achieve the benefits of wood ageing without the wood.
