From a 7 Hectare slope in front of Chateau Ausone - the Moulin Saint-Georges is a real winner in 2023. More broad and powerful in feel than some years - this remains an absolute charmer, but a charmer with some serious intent. A wonderful mulch of blue and deep-red berries is lifted by floral hits of pink blossom and even a whiff of violets. Imposing but with lovely layers and nuance. Owned by the Vauthier family from Ausone since 1921, this remains a real steal for Grand Cru Saint Emilion with such pedigree and heritage. L&S (Apr 2024)

Grip and length, grilled campfire smoke, slate texture, nuanced blueberry and raspberry fruits, cold ash and pumice stone. West exposure for the slopes here means cooler temperatures and lower ph, fresh acidities, helps accentuate this oyster shell salinity. Drinking range: 2029 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Moulin Saint-Georges emerges from a small, 7-hectare property in front of Ausone. The richer side of the year comes through in the wine's dark blue/purplish fruit profile, lavender, licorice and spice notes. There's a bit of tannin here, but élevage should help this come together. The Moulin Saint-Georges includes 100% new oak, quite a statement of intent at this level. Drinking range: 2028 - 2043 Rating: 90-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

The blend in 2023 is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, picked from September 21st, finishing on September 29th. The vines are aged 35 years on average. The estate’s position and drainage means there was (with treatment) no mildew damage here. The aromatic profile really lifts this above the Vauthier entry-level wines (Fonbel, Simard, Haut-Simard) with sweetly ripe griottes, blackcurrants and currants, an almost confit intensity framed with rose petals and violets. This translates onto a more velvety concentration on the palate, supple and rich in lightly creamed berry fruits, before a silky and harmonious finish, allowing the finely integrated tannins to work with the fruit into the finish. A deliciously elegant style with surefire potential. The alcohol here is 13.85%, so 14% on the label. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

Château Moulin Saint Georges

Owned by Alain Vauthier, Château Moulin Saint Georges is situated in Saint-Emilion and covers 7 hectares. The vineyards are well sited on the south-west facing 'Pavie' slope. The average age of the vines on this slope is 26 years old, and they are planted at a density of 6500 vines/hectare. Vauthier believes that the quality of his wine is a direct result of how well the vines are tended to, therefore yields are kept extremely low in order to concentrate the flavour, and all grapes are hand-harvested to ensure only the best grapes are used in production.
