Mocha, blood orange, creamy ripe damson and black fruits, a swirl of peony flowers, succulent but without being heavy, this is a great Nenin, showing potential of the property's 20 year old Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, used in the blend for the first time in this vintage. 40% new oak for ageing, 46hl/h yield, 3.68ph. 67 Merlot, 34 Cabernet Franc, 3 Cabernet Sauvignon This red-toned Nénin has terrific brightness, crisp fruit, and superb tannins.  The overall feel is of a wine with lip-smacking intensity but no excess weight.  The fruit spectrum delves into all red and purple hues, from mulberries to violets, crimson cherries to tantalising pomegranates. Underneath all this action lives breath-taking steeliness in the form of brittle acidity.  The finish is minutes long and perfectly balanced, with fine-grained tannins barely perceptible.  While this sensual wine might appear to possess a soft exterior, the fine line of high tensile fruit in its core is impressive and will arm it for a long life ahead. The 2023 Nénin is a classy wine that marries power with nuance. Cabernet Franc plays a prominent role here, and that comes through in its aromatic presence and overall feel. There's also a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, which no doubt contributes to the wine's profile as well. Rose petal, mocha, spice, licorice, leather and cedar are all laced together in this powerhouse Pomerol. I can't wait to see where this goes. The grand vin from Nenin is 67% Merlot, with 30% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, the first time the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has gone this high, picked between September 9th and 28th. The yield was 46 hl/ha, from 26.5 hectares, higher than most recent vintages. The blend includes 7% press wine. The nose is expressive and enticing, with floral notes to the fore, violets, pencil shavings and graphite, the Cabernet showing through quite strongly. The palate feels open and nicely composed, with a gently stitched together sense of harmony, easing into a rather easy-going midpalate, with juicy fruit draped over a framework of dry, lightly grippy tannins. A charming and approachable example of the Pomerol appellation. The alcohol is reported to be 13.39%. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

Château Nénin

Two things make Château Nenin standout from the rest of Pomerol – at 32ha it is considerably larger than most in in this crowded appellation; and Nenin has a real bona fide 19th Century château at its core rather than the more usual small shed. Infact it appears more along the lines of something one might find in the Haut-Médoc which is perhaps fitting as, since 1987, it has been in common ownership with Château Potensac and the great Saint Julien estate of Château Leoville Las Cases. As one might expect with such a noble stable-mate, quality has advanced rapidly in line with a lot of healthy investment in the estate. The vineyards are planted with 78% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon with an average age of around 30 years. The second wine is Fugue de Nenin.
