CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT

2023 Vieilles Vignes Grand Vin Sec

Grapes Sémillon, Sauv Blanc
Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Classification Sec
ABV 14%

This is a blend of 57% Semillon and 43% Sauvignon Blanc, from parcels which previously fed into the grand vin Sauternes. The vines are about 45 years old on average. The fermentation took place in barrels, using just 12% new oak. The nose is bright and perfumed, with waxed white peach, orange, oak, with a rich floral perfume which calls to mind rose, honeysuckle and jasmine. The palate is polished, substantial with crushed white peach, waxed lemon peel, peach skin and gravel. There is a fine phenolic grip here, and more modest acidity than in the Lions. In the end, an excellent poise. The alcohol on analysis is 13.8%. Rating: 93-95 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Grand Vin Blanc Sec Vieilles Vignes is superb. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, sage, mint and dried flowers all run through this super-expressive, savory dry white. There's real phenolic intensity to the Vieilles Vignes—a rich, deep white for the dinner table. Pretty floral top notes and a kick of tropical fruit brighten the finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 94-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

Real density to this old-vine white with dried-apple, peach and stone character. It’s full and dense but always vivid. I love the phenolics here. Fantastic dry white. From 40- to 60-year-old vines. 57% semillon and 43% sauvignon blanc. Rating: 95-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
