The 2023 Clos de l'Oratoire is one of the most changed wines in the Neipperg portfolio. An increase in Cabernet Franc is immediately evident in the wine's explosive bouquet and overall energy. Rose petal, sage, mint, dried flowers and orange peel race across the palate. Clos de l'Oratoire is absolutely beguiling in 2023. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. This is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, picked September 21st to the 25th, and the yield was 44 hl/ha. A sweet style of fruit on the nose here, with ripe red cherry, damson and dried raspberry notes, with little elements of honeyed toast coming from the oak. This feels coherent and fresh on the palate, showing rather juicy red fruits, red cherry, raspberry and currants, with twists of tobacco and toast, as well as a rich wrapping of modesty grained tannins which add a drying note to the finish. A modern fruit profile here, the juicy body of the vintage, and a rather firm, dry, old-school tannic structure. I suspect this will develop well if it can soak up those tannins. The alcohol is around 13.5%. Rating: 90-92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
Aromas of cherries, dark chocolate, spices and violets introduce the 2023 Clos de l'Oratoire, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered wine that's charming and harmonious on the attack, displaying a touch of youthfully grippy tannin on the finish. The blend contains fully 25% Cabernet Franc. Rating: 90-92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)
This shows tight tannins and a racy feel, with floral, black-cherry and dark-fruit notes in both the nose and palate. It’s medium-bodied with a refined and complex nature. Long and true. Finesse with depth. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)
Clos de l'Oratoire
Located on Saint-Émilion's north-east slope, the Clos de l'Oratoire estate dates back to the mid-19th century to the Beylot family, Libourne based négociants. In the 1969 Saint-Émilion reclassification, Clos de l'Oratoire was ranked Grand Cru Classé. The 10.32 hectares of vines grow on clay-limestone and Fronsac molasse on the upper part of the slope, and clay-sand on the lower part of the slope, a terroir which is enitrely suited to the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape blend. The average age of vines at Clos de l'Oratoire is 35 years, and grapes are all hand harvested into small crates to avoid bruising. Since 1991, the estate has been under the charge of Comte Stephan von Neipperg, who inherited part of the vineyard from his father Joseph-Hubert, Graf von Neipperg.
