This vineyard in the high ground (400m) is 10km from Nuits Saint Georges. The soil is loaded with limestone - a sparkling white vineyard. In vintages with plenty of warmth like 2023 you can really understand why the great and the good from the Cote de Nuits are so interested in these beautiful rolling hills, that used to be somewhat marginal for ripening grapes. This is very smart indeed - grown up and restrained, you can sense the coolness of the rock and these high vines, but the red fruit has a 'just' sweet edge. Very pure style - nicely done. A more deeply pitched nose features notes of plum, dark currant and plenty of earth. Here too there is sold density and punch to the delicious flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lingering if mildly tangy finale. I suspect that the tang will eventually disappear and this too is worth a look. Drinking range: 2027 - Rating: 86-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos du Prieuré comes from south-facing vines, which explains why it is riper and more expressive than the Corvées de Villy. The bouquet delivers kirsch, orange pith and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a keen thread of acidity and a peppery accent toward the finish. I prefer this cuvée to the aforementioned Villy. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2025)
20% whole bunches. Marnes blanches 40% slope low trained vines. The floral side of raspberry, very elegant and at ideal ripeness. The oak currently is a little prominent at the back but this will calm down. The fruit is exquisite otherwise. Drinking range: 2026 - 2030 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2024)
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
