Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru

60 Cabernet France, 35 Merlot, 5 Cabernet Sauvignon: 100% new oak for 20 months: Certified organic: Firm, slightly bitter and uncommonly imposing, this is a challenging wine with a sudden impact on the palate that somewhat takes the breath away. There is profound fruit depth, yet it seems a little raw and elemental, and while I do not doubt that this wine has summoned up massive power from the limestone in the soils, it seems to lack the composure of its parent wine. In need of at least a decade of quiet repose, this is a challenging, complex mini-Ausone, and it will surely appeal to die-hard fans of this unique property. 17.5+/20 Rating: 17.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Chapelle d’Ausone is fabulous, as it often is. Succulent, ripe tannins give the 2023 tons of pure charm. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha all run through this sumptuous yet structured Saint-Émilion. This will be stellar in another few years time. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

The blend in 2023 is 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked on September 14th and 19th for the Merlot, 25th, 25th and 28th for the Cabernet Franc and October 5th for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The yield was 38 hl/ha. The Vauthiers had to do a little saignée here, the true yield was 42 hl/ha, but they bled off 4 hl/ha to achieve the concentration and balance they desired. Beautifully fresh and pure Cabernet Franc aromas on the nose, with currants, roses, dark chocolate and toast. The palate presents a silky, relaxed and harmonious style, with nice but not tense concentration, so this certainly does not feel overdone. Lovely harmony though, the palate gliding along, just showing some structure and spicy energy at the finish. Such elegance and charm here, with a coherent length. A beautifully delineated Chapelle d’Ausone that will give great pleasure in eight or ten years time. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

A fresh, delicate bouquet of cassis, violet, iris, raspberries and mulberries introduces the 2023 Chapelle d'Ausone, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured wine with a fleshy core of fruit structured around chalky tannins and a long, precise finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 91-93 Yohan Castaing, www.robertparker.com (Apr 2024)

Château Ausone

Unquestionably one of the biggest names of the Right Bank, this is also one of the oldest chateaux in the whole of Bordeaux. Situated at the edge of the limestone plateau on the approach to the village of Saint Emilion, at an altitude of 75 metres, Ausone dominates your view as you drive in to the village, with its beautiful stone gateposts, steeply sloping vineyards, and dry stone walls. Underneath the chateau are kilometre upon kilometre of stone quarries, the smallest of which (at 1,800m2) is the wine cellar. This was excavated back in the 16th century (most of the stone in Saint Emilion ended up building either the village itself, or the handsome limestone buildings in central Bordeaux). Further underground are stone vaults dating back 500 years! The humidity in the cellars is at well over 90%, meaning that they rarely have to perfrom ouillage (topping up), and the angel's rarely get their share! Above ground there is also the Magdeleine chapel (hence the name of the second wine of the estate, Chapelle d'Ausone), which again adds to the sense of mystique on visiting Ausone. They are currently renovating the chapel, and also creating a small room for receiving visitors (although don't hold your breath that this will ever be a centre for wine tourism - the Vaultier family are very discreet, and it is tough to get an appointment here). One of the smallest of all the top estates in Bordeaux, at just over seven hectares (smaller than its Saint Emilion rival Cheval Blanc, smaller even than Petrus in neighbouring Pomerol, but twice the size of le Pin), vines have been cultivated here since the time of Roman poet Ausonius. I'm not sure anyone is suggesting that Ausonius actually owned this vineyard, but it is likely to have been named in his honour.
