56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc: 45% new oak: 13.2% alc: 48 hl/ha: Harvested from 11 – 28 September What a stunning nose! It takes my breath away: pinpoint accuracy and joyously welcoming, this is, at once, a generous and open-armed wine. The perfume shows the superb qualities of the tiptop quality Cabernet Franc in this blend. These complexities are heightened in this vintage, and they act like an ambassador for the flavour that follows. Stunning and linear, with streamlined Cabernet Sauvignon forming the core and Merlot filling in the gaps in this beautiful mosaic. It is incredible to think this is a second wine! Chapeau. Medium intensity ruby red, good grip and slightly old schol tannins, but this has real charm and juice, savoury and easy to drink, good Pauillac typicity. 42% new oak (reduced down from 50% over last few years). Drinking range: 2029 - 2040 Rating: 91 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)
The 2023 Lacoste-Borie is a soft, supple second wine to drink on release, while its fruity, open-knit personality is on display. Succulent red cherry, spice and rose petal are nicely pushed forward. Lovely aromatics from the Franc linger. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033 Rating: 88-90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
The second wine of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, this is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, picked at a yield of 48 hl/ha. The harvest ran from September 11th until the 28th. I like the bright sense of purity on the nose here, with dark loganberry fruit, veering into leafy blackberry and mint a little, wrapped in a gentle application of cedary new oak. The palate is fresh, pure and bright, with a beautifully delineated form, wrapping up a core of minty red cherry and loganberry fruit, filled with powdery tannin, an attractive form for the vintage. An attractive second wine, superior to many deuxièmes vins I have tasted this year. I suspect it will be one to drink in the immediate years after release though. Tasted twice. The alcohol is 13.2%. Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Pauillac Cinquième Cru 1855.
If there's an estate that can rival Lynch Bages for the crown of most over-performing 5th Growth, it would be Grand-Puy-Lacoste.
The "Grand Puy" is the low gravelly hill on which the vineyards sit. In 1750 a portion were sold to Pierre Ducasse and became, obviously, Château Grand Puy Ducasse while the rest, after a couple of name changes owing to inheritance by daughters, became Château Grand Puy Lacoste.
The Borie family bought into Grand Puy Lacoste in 1978 and began quite a renaissance for the property.
Just a few kilometres from the town of Pauillac, the vineyards of Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste total roughly 36 hectares (90 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 75% of the total plantings and the rest belonging to Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Typical of the region, the vineyard consists of a deep gravel top soil on a limestone base.
Production is about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and then the wines are placed into oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months of aging.
