The 2023 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a bright, beautifully focused wine. Graphite, lavender, mocha, chocolate, incense, licorice and crushed rocks all run through this gorgeous, wonderfully inviting Saint-Estèphe. This is an especially serious Le Marquis, perhaps because of the inclusion of some Merlot lots that usually go into the Grand Vin. In this tasting, I find the aromatic presence and structure of the Cabernet highly expressive and very much in the foreground. What a gorgeous wine this is. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038 Rating: 91-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
The second wine of Calon is 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% each Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and the picking began September 6th for the Merlot, finishing the 20th, the Cabernets began on the 28th, finishing the 30th. Dusty dried plum and cherry blossom on the nose, with a hint of orange peel. A rather open, juicy and loose character at the start of the palate, with a slowly building powdery grip of tannins, and strident acidity. This feels a little less finessed than its stablemate Capbern, in terms of balance and texture at least, although the tannins are nicely managed and give a fine, polished grip beneath the light blanket of fruit. Naturally, this grip persists more than any other feature in the length. The alcohol is about 14.6%. Rating: 89-91 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is a blend of 50% Merlot and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, incorporating the estate's finest Merlot plots that generally go into the grand vin but which didn't match with Calon's best Cabernet Sauvignon lots this year. Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, burning embers and spices, framed by a deft touch of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and structured, with impressive density and muscle, built for the cellar. Rating: 91-93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)
Château Calon Ségur
St Estèphe Troisième cru 1855 Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost Grand Cru estate classified in 1855, sitting just north of the village of St Estèphe. It was once part, as the name suggests, of the vast holdings of the Ségur family, owners amongst others of Lafite and Latour. In the 18th Century, Nicolas-Alexandre Ségur is said to have remarked "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon", and the label bears his heart to this day. In the early years of the 19th Century, the then owner Etienne Dumoulin became interested in an underdeveloped part of the estate, which was cleared and planted with vines. Such was the quality that the rump of Calon-Ségur was sold off, and Etienne's new estate went on to become Château Montrose. Calon-Ségur came into the hands of the Gasqueton family in 1894, and it is still owned by the family. A solid performer, especially recently, the Grand Vin is made with a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (as high as 90% in some vintages). The vineyards are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the wines spend 18 months in wood. The second wine is Marquis de Calon.
