As this vineyard edges ever closer to achieving its goal of being elevated to Grand Cru status - in vintages like 2023 you can really understand why this is a very fair goal for the growers here. With a 2m layer of clay and iron oxide its no surprise the colour and power of this is bold and broad shouldered, but Thibault explains there is also a fault line running through his plot (2 Ha!) that brings small limestone pebbles to the surface - which in some years bring a tangible fresh line of minerality to the juice. This is certainly true for 2023 where the powerful, dark fruited core has a fresh edge, a pep to it which is totally charming. The wine is big, and tightly furled for now. It will need time - but this seems more open for business at this early stage than usual, and it is easy to se that everything is in place for an absolute classic. L&S (Nov 2024)

Lush and saturated with black cherry, blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors, this red also evokes mineral and spice notes. Intense, building on the palate to the long, complex aftertaste. There's lots of oxidized iron in the clay here, creating a wine with broad shoulders and the girth to go with them. Baked cherries, Damson plums and baking spices create a rich flavor profile that is hoisted up by strapping tannins and considerable acidity. Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
