A big, full-blown, powerful blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy), which nevertheless retains a balance and freshness along with its considerable vinosity. Rated even higher than Bollinger by Robert Parker this is exceptional value!L&S
From grand cru Bouzy. Philippe Secondé tells me that Bouzy Pinot Noir can be quite heavy but with this cuvée they want to capture the freshness of the harvest fruit. Smoky nectarine, toast topped with slices of dark-golden peaches. This is nice. Round and full of robust, juicy, generous fruit topped with toasted granola. The bubbles are sparse but not aggressive and seem to pop with marshmallow and spiced sweetness in the mouth. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 16.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2024)
100% Pinot Noir from Bouzy, 35-year-old vines sustainably farmed without chemicals. Cover crops. Dosage 6 g/l. 18,000 bottles. Mushrooms and grapefruit. Quite woodsy, quite savoury with a note of truffle through the white citrus. Acacia blossom dipped in lemon honey. Real weight and showy breadth in the mouth. Masses of bubbles, but not astringent. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 16.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2023)
*STAR BUY* The toasty, sappy thrust of a champagne made entirely from pinot noir is immensely pleasing. This is bold, big, reassuring and amazing value. 'The Best Champagnes for Christmas'.Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Nov 2018)
Emerging from the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, the NV Brut Blanc de Noirs offers notable textural resonance and breadth. Kirsch, plum, white flowers and spice build in a creamy, open-knit Champagne that will drink well with minimal cellaring. There's real Pinot character and breadth here. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 5, 2022. Drinking range: 2023 - 2031 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Nov 2023)

The NV Brut Blanc de Noir is terrific. Broad, ample and creamy, with tons of Bouzy character, the Blanc de Noirs screams with Pinot personality. Dried pear, spice, ginger, crushed flowers and chamomile give this racy, vinous NV Champagne tons of nuance and sheer trait. This finishes just a bit stern, otherwise, it is very nicely done. Up next, we have a bottle from a small grower based in Bouzy, which was, and to some extent still is, known as red wine country. Blanc de noirs means it’s only made from dark grapes which you can taste in the vivid, orangey fruit moving into marmalade flavours that have a real smokiness on the finish. Tangy and delicious.Henry Jeffreys, The Lady (Apr 2022)
The nicely layered nose of petrol, yeast, citrus confit, poached pear and a whiff of toastiness displays evident maturity (though by no means any oxidation). There is fine volume to the delicious and relatively broad-shouldered flavors that are supported by a moderately firm mousse on the sappy and palate coating finish that is nicely dry but not austere. This is one of those wines that can certainly be enjoyed now for its complexity and persistence or held for several more years in the hopes that even better depth will develop. The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Quintessence du Pinot Noir is a beautiful, resonant wine with tons of Bouzy textural richness. Small red berry, dried herbs, crushed flowers and spice fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. Readers who enjoy Blanc de Noirs will find much to admire here. This is a terrific showing. Intensely yeasty, leesy nose, poised, a classic blend; wild strawberry and savoury notes inform the palate with good autolytic definition and length. Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 88 Decanter Magazine (Jun 2017)
All-Pinot Noir Champagne in the characterisitically plump, fleshy style of the Grand Cru village of Bouzy from which it comes. It has a flowing, creamy texture and biscuity richness, but finishes on a lingeringly refreshing, crisp, citrus note. A good Champagne for drinking with food, although it certainly doesn't need it. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2016)
(100% Pinot Noir from Bouzy; 6 g/l dosage): Bright yellow. Ripe peach and pear scents are lifted by suggestions of Meyer lemon and smoky minerals. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering bitter pear skin and peach pit flavors underscored by a gingery element. Shows very good clarity and thrust on the chewy finish, with the mineral and peach notes echoing. This Champagne has the heft and power to work with rich, strongly seasoned foods, even poultry. Rating: 91 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2015)
Big and much more refined than the Aube Blanc de Noirs with which the UK (mass) market is flooded. Neat and crisper than the Grande Cru Reserve. Very appetising. VGV Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com
The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru reveals good balance and delineation in an accessible, mid-weight style. The attractive finish is long, sweet and layered. Disgorged April, 2008. Drinking range: 2013 - 2014 Rating: 88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2009)
From Bouzy. Lots of development on the nose – very flattering. Quite rich but beautifully balanced. Lemon mousse sensation. Very easy to drink. Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com
The Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru blossoms on the palate with an expansive core of perfumed fruit. This finely textured, silky wine possesses notable clarity and delineation in an understated yet pleasing style. The long, clean finish gives the wine a touch more freshness than the Brut Grand Cru Grande Reserve. This is a highly rewarding wine to enjoy over the next few years. Rating: 91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com
Light, bright gold with a strong mousse. Citrus and pear aromas are underscored by subtle nuttiness, with dried flowers and honey adding complexity. Deep in orchard fruit flavors, with an element of lemon zest adding energy and lift. Definitely on the rich side, but there's also vivacity and balance. Finishes with gentle grip and an echo of floral honey. This would be great with washed-rind cheeses. Rating: 90 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
I very much like the complexity of the green apple, pear and white flower scents that are trimmed in toasty yeast elements that can also be found on the delicious and relatively full-bodied flavors that possess the same fine depth as communicated by the nose, all wrapped in a succulent and saliva-inducing finale. This is really quite good and while I wouldn't describe it as an elegant Champagne, if you enjoy full-flavored, indeed even robust, examples, this would be a good one to check out. Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com
Full-bodied and biscuity, sporting red berry, citrus and honey aromas and flavours. Dense, mouth coating and rich enough to stand up to seafood dishes. Rating: 88 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com
Blanc de Noirs champagne, made in this case entirely from black-skinned Pinot Noir grapes, is one of the few sparklers that can wash down punchy festive fare and perk up jaded palates. Edmond Barnaut at Bouzy is a new name to me but his full-bodied bubbly from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy are a joy, and his powerful blanc de Noirs is full of seductive ripe, waxy, winey fruit that will have plenty of admirers.Jane MacQuitty, The Times
Pale color. Complex nose melds raspberry and strawberry fruit notes with minerals and mushroom sauteed in butter. Creamy, round and pure, with smoky and floral nuances and a fairly dense, billowing texture. Doesn't have quite the grip for outstanding, but this offers plenty of flavor interest. I'm not usually a fan of blanc de noirs Champagne, but this is very good. Also tasted: NV Grande Reserve, NV Rose Authentique. Rating: 89 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Nov 2003)
Edmond Barnaut was a grape-grower and wine-broker when in 1873 he married the daughter of an old Bouzy family, Apolline Godmé-Barancourt. Using his own and his wife's vineyards he created his own marque and began selling bottles the following year. Philippe and Laurette Secondé took over in 1985, and they have now been joined by their son Guillaume Secondé, the 5th generation of the Barnaut family. After 150 harvests, Guillaume's return to the domaine, gradually taking his spot as "future chef" for the 6th generation.
The Secondés make well-aged Champagnes (five years average for the Grande Réserve) which are very representative of the full-bodied style of Bouzy - the excellent Pinot Noir of the village's Grand Cru Vineyards providing the backbone (2/3) of the Grande Réserve and all of the Blanc de Noirs. As Philippe puts it 'I want to express our exceptional terroir, naturally and simply, without artifice and without giving in to fashions.'.
The domaine is certified for High Environmental Value (HVE) and Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC).
