All from Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy, two-thirds Pinot and one third Chardonnay, racy, fresh and dancing style with balance and brightness to support the nice weight and full flavour. Like all the Barnaut cuvées, it is based on a perpetual reserve, so that each harvest is added to the reserve, and half is then bottled, leaving the other half to be the reserve for the following year. L&S (Apr 2024)
95% Bouzy grand cru with a bit of Ambonnay. This is the 150th anniversary of the family making this wine.
Sharp and full of cooking apples but within a lovely ribbon wrap of toffee apple. Smoked lemon. I’d love this with chicken sosatie or gyros. A bit blunt and robust but a good wine for bold food. Drinking range: 2024 - 2029 Rating: 16 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2024)
67% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay, organically farmed (cover crops, no chemicals). 35-year-old vines. 95% Bouzy. Hand-picked. 10 months in tanks on lees, six years sur lattes. Wine comes from their perpetual solera of reserve wines. Full malo. Guillaume is the 6th generation and this was the cuvée they started with in 1874 ('there is half a bubble of 1874 wine in here'). Dosage 6 g/l. 40,000 bottles. Praline nose. Round on the nose and the mid palate but the attack is direct, focused, framed by ripe lemon acidity. Liquorice, rye and caraway breadth. Lovely balance. The kind of wine you can breathe easy with – there isn't a notch of stress or tension in this glass. Drinking range: 2023 - 2026 Rating: 16 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2023)
Champagne Barnaut
Edmond Barnaut was a grape-grower and wine-broker when in 1873 he married the daughter of an old Bouzy family, Apolline Godmé-Barancourt. Using his own and his wife's vineyards he created his own marque and began selling bottles the following year. Philippe and Laurette Secondé took over in 1985, and they have now been joined by their son Guillaume Secondé, the 5th generation of the Barnaut family. After 150 harvests, Guillaume's return to the domaine, gradually taking his spot as "future chef" for the 6th generation.
The Secondés make well-aged Champagnes (five years average for the Grande Réserve) which are very representative of the full-bodied style of Bouzy - the excellent Pinot Noir of the village's Grand Cru Vineyards providing the backbone (2/3) of the Grande Réserve and all of the Blanc de Noirs. As Philippe puts it 'I want to express our exceptional terroir, naturally and simply, without artifice and without giving in to fashions.'.
The domaine is certified for High Environmental Value (HVE) and Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC).
