LE PETIT ROY
12ème Année Domaine Jean Royer
Grapes | Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre |
Colour | Red |
Origin | France, Vin de France |
ABV | 14.5% |
’Le Petit Roy’ is simply a Vin de France because it is made up of eveything that does not make it into Jean-Marie's Châteaneuf cuvées, and as such carries no vintage on the label, only ’12eme année’ (which is a clue). It is deceptively easy to drink, packed with ripe peppery fruit and a lovely, almost old-fashioned ‘liquidity’, making it so very gluggable. Tannins soft enough to be drunk cool, so don't hesitate to stick it in the fridge. L&S (Oct 2013)

A real find. French winemaker Jean-Marie Royer makes sublime Châteaneuf-du-pape, but this is straight vin de table. Gloriously fresh, it is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, with bright red fruits, cracked pepper and a grippy finish. Will Lyons, The Wall Street Journal (Jun 2014)
Domaine Jean Royer
Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.
His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
