Over five years old, pale in colour with a rich golden hue, medium dry, intense and long. Quite a raisiny, molasses edge gives it a roundness, but the purity is here. L&S (Jun 2010)

Pale, bright orange and medium sweet. Pungent, somehow intensely mineral, nose. Lovely walnut notes and extremely elegant. Yes, it's sweet enough to drink after a meal, but it's actually quite delicate and I could imagine enjoying it virtually any time. RS 86 g/l. Deep orange-gold. Even more dried grasses here than on the Rainwater. Sour apricot freshness, firm tannic grip, real integrity here. Spicy, barley-sugar sweetness. Beautiful balance between that hay character and the intense fruit. This is Madeira with character, not just fruit and sweetness and acidity, though it has plenty of all of those. Moving on to the Reservas, the Boal 5-Year-Old Reserva is sourced from vineyards in Arco da Calheta and Prazeres, thereafter, aged in French casks using the canteiro method. It has an exotic bouquet of passion fruit, honey and a touch of marmalade that soars from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with an unctuous entry counterbalanced by crisp acidity. There is huge weight and persistency within this Bual, with roasted walnut, dried mango and spice towards the long, rich finish. It possesses convincing volume and length. Barbeito
The Barbeito family Madeiras are almost unique in their total non use of caramel to colour the wines. The natural pale colour of theise great Madeiras gives an impression of their being light and perhaps less concentrated than others, but on tasting the wines this impression is quickly dispelled. They are brighter and more pure than most other producers but they have beautiful texture, wonderfully intensity and are immensely long.
