POL ROGER
White Foil Brut Champagne NV
Grapes | Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier |
Colour | White |
Origin | France, Champagne |
ABV | 12% |
One of the great classics, this is another firm favourite of ours and consistently very high in quality. It's not just us that love it - at the last three Royal Weddings its Pol that has been popping to help the celebrations, and famously Winston Churchill had a real passion for Pol (a pint a day some say!?). It is no surprise to us though as 'White Foil' - as its fondly known - never fails to satisfy.
This cuvée is the definitive house-style and makes for the perfect aperitif. It is made of equal portions of the three Champagne grape varieties Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, time and attention to detail are the keys here. This is traditionally composed from 30 still 'base wines' and a blend drawn from at least three different vintages, all adding complexity and sophistication to this perennial winner. The 2018 Brut Vintage is a very pretty, open-knit Champagne to drink now and over the next 10-15 years. In a vintage in which so many wines are on the lighter side, the 2018 is super-expressive, with lovely depth and impeccable balance. The 2018 can be enjoyed now, but I would prefer to cellar it for a year or two. Hints of pear, dried flowers, kirsch and mint are nicely layered on a spine of fruit and structure. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2024)
2016 base tasted, one third each of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The 2017 base has been sold, and I was told that it would be this edition on sale until the end of 2022, which would make it a very smart buy indeed. A pale, buttery and creamy lining here, before expressive apricot, strawberry tart and zingy orange citrus, perked up with browned pastry and marine notes. Fullsome yet carefully shaped, this is on top form. Tom Hewson Rating: 92 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Dec 2022)
The 2012 Brut Vintage is radiant and super-expressive from the get-go. Apricot, pastry, baked apple and buttery notes wrap around the palate effortlessly. Soft and caressing, with tons of immediacy, the 2012 is quite showy today. More importantly, it is delicious and also very easy to like. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2020)
Champagne Pol Roger
Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
