SANDEMAN
20 Year Old Tawny
Origin | Portugal, Port |
District | Tawny Port |
ABV | 20% |
Tawny port can be served slightly chilled and is a great aperitif or digestif with cheese, or even Christmas pudding. This is exceptional, with a dry, nutty finish. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Dec 2019)

Recently tasted in a full line up of shipper's twenty year old tawny ports, this stood out for its length, freshness and fabulous finish, as well as concentration and sweetness. Serve slightly chilled.L&S (Nov 2007)
Bright amber color with notes of toffee caramel, crushed walnut, orange marmalade, turmeric and praline. Medium body. Bright and vivid on the palate with steady acidity and medium sweetness. Delicious and so lively for a tawny. Almonds, too. Drink or hold. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)
When did Sandeman repackage this in a sort of bitters tapered bottle in clear glass suggesting the wine is bright red? The plastic foil (so much more difficult to peel off than the ones that seem to be metallic) goes over a glass stopper. And then, for good measure, a gold medallion is sunk into the glass. Deep sigh. So let's see how this long-loved wine actually tastes, ignoring its visual makeover. Bright orange transparent tawny. Smells on the cusp of too rancio and concentrated but it's sweet and charming on the palate. Smooth as a baby's bottom and eminently sippable without any food – probably best that way, in fact. Perhaps not as complex as the slightly cerebral Noval 10 year old but this would not disappoint someone looking for a super-smooth, light, long-wood-matured port – so long as they ignored the packaging. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)
Sandeman
Scotsman George Sandeman set up business in Tom's Coffee House in London in 1790, trading in Ports and Sherries. An agency in Cadiz soon followed, and then a Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and, by the beginning of the 20th Century, Sandeman Ports and Sherries were to be found all across the world. Seven generations down the line, another George Sandeman can be found at the helm of the House of Sandeman, although the family relinquished ownership in 1980. Sandeman are now owned by Sogrape. Sandeman's most widely admired products are their aged Tawny Ports.
