Our annual visit to Burgundy this year was a tale of two halves, and I’m not just talking red & white. After the difficulty of the 2019 tasting run, where Charles and I had to tackle every producer over a 10-day stretch (to avoid self-isolating twice on return), we decided this year to split up 2020.

I picked late – starting as most people finished.

An interesting report given that there seems to be a 'blanket' view that 2021 is a disaster in France. In Burgundy the quantity of white is certainly disastrously low, but there will as usual be some nicer surprises.

Asked how the harvest has gone, one négociant replied that he felt that Bordeaux has got away with frost losses much better than some other parts of France, with frosts that were -3C to -4C, the kind that the great Châteaux are able to deal with by using very expensive things like helicopters or candles in the vineyard.

Louis Roederer Collection 242 – a new multi-vintage blend based on a perpetual reserve and 44% of reserve wines. This shift away from a NV blend may come as a bit of a shock to those that have been avid followers of the Brut Premier.

The Outsiders 2021 We enjoyed a slightly belated tasting of the wines which variously seem to have become known as ‘The September Series’ ‘La Place Late Releases’ or to us ‘The Outsiders’. Something which more or less began with a few Californian producers looking for global reach for their wine, it now represents wine from Italy, Oregon, Argentina, Australia, The Rhone and Bordeaux itself.
