The prominent reduction this displayed for years has finally receded to the background even if it’s not completely hidden on the cool and restrained nose of yeasty and nutty, even slightly toasty aromas of citrus and Granny Smith apples. There is very good intensity to the particularly well-delineated middle weight flavors that are supported by an admirably fine mousse while delivering good if not sensational length on the youthfully austere, linear, compact and notably dry finish. This has certainly improved since it was released but in spite of having had this many times, it isn’t one of my favorite Dom vintages. Even so, I’m content to enjoy it anytime! The 2004 Dom Pérignon is a totally different beast. It is the product of a very long and cool growing season marked by heavy summer rains in some sectors of the region and then ideal conditions through to harvest. After a brutally torrid 2003, the vines responded by setting a huge crop. In fact, 2004 remains the most abundant vintage in the history of Champagne. The best wines, though, well, they have always impressed with their laser-like cut and focus. That’s exactly what comes through in the 2004 Dom Pérignon. Tasted from magnum, the 2004 shows all the linear energy and crystalline precision of the year, but with that extra magic that comes from fermentation and longer aging in the big bottle. The 2004 has long been one of my favorite Dom Pérignons. From magnum, it is especially captivating. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 98 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2022)
Another stellar wine, the 2004 Dom Pérignon is just starting to show the first signs of aromatic development, as well as a bit of added weight it did not have as a young wine. The 2004 remains a bright, mid-weight DP built on persistence and length more than overt volume. I have always had a soft spot for the 2004. This tasting does nothing to dampen that enthusiasm. Drinking range: 2019 - 2039 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jul 2019)
Three-litre Jéroboam. A vintage described by Richard Geoffroy as ‘a no-brainer – you just had to be wise enough to step back’. The biggest ever vintage – still. Real richness of age on the nose – even a suggestion of crème pâtissière. This is a real classic with massive edge and excitement. Lovely neat, saline finish.Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2018)
Champagne Moët & Chandon
Claude Moët founded the famous Champagne House in 1743. Their reputation was secured by his grandson Jean-Rémy Moët who was friendly with and, thus, received the endorsement of Napoleon. Jean-Rémy handed the business on to his son Victor Moët and son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles and Moët et Cie became Moët & Chandon. The first vintage of Dom Perignon was the 1921, released in 1936, and it was the first De-Luxe cuvée on the market. Quite dramatic post-War expansion turned Moët & Chandon into the drinks and luxury goods company LVMH.
