Vineyard Charmes Chambertin

An even darker colour than the Clos de la Roche. A great mass of dark ripe black fruit, big and supple, but this too has energy and something to say, and says it with some force - Charmes Chambertin with attitude. A really terrific ball of power and energy, and very long too. From the top of Mazoyères (and it tastes like it). Drinking range: 2022 - L&S (Nov 2015)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

(from tiny grapes in what Lignier described as the last plot in Mazoyères before Charmes; 13. 2% natural alcohol; 60% vendange entier; Lignier did just a single pigeage late in the fermentation): Deep red-ruby. Superripe but brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, smoked meat, game, licorice and bitter chocolate. Plush, thick and sweet but with surprising definition and lift to its violet and boysenberry flavors. Not a particularly mineral style but a major mouthful of sweet, supple purple fruits. This wine has a rather high pH of 3. 7 but does not lack for energy. Lignier noted that he used to make this wine with 100% whole clusters. He farms these vines for the owner but noted that they will probably be sold before the 2016 harvest. Rating: 90-93 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2016)

The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru is 100% whole bunch fruit. There is a certain richness and opulence on the nose, the black cherry fruit shot through with blood orange and citrus fruit. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, satin-like in texture, so much so you might assume there is new oak here when in fact there is zilch. Seamless and sumptuous, this will be difficult to resist in its youth. Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 90-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2015)

1.5 barrels and new oak. 80% whole cluster…now for three years I work in the vines the which are 80 years old Sweet, volumous and richly textured. Velvet tannins. Rich, perhaps a tad opulent…very floral on the finish - very alluring. Rating: 19.15 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2015)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine now of 13.5 hectares, some owned, some in fermage with a little bought in. An average of 290 barrels a year. 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis, so it's lutte raisonnée.

The wines are made with the least intervention possible, with lots of whole bunches. little extraction (one or two pigeages but mostly he's into remontages, then aged in barrel with 15-20% new wood. They have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
