This historic estate (celebrating 260 years of farming this year) is also run by Christian Seely of Noval fame. The quality here is immense from these beautiful old vineyards. Perhaps not the biggest name in the Douro, but the estate's long history and the current team's prowess mean this should not be overlooked. From two very old plots this is inviting, luxuriant and poised, full of warm dark fruit and a herbal, mineral twang. Smart stuff, Christian believes this is the best vintage port they have made here. A stylish and refined style, with a sleek, silky feel along the edges, while blueberry, açai berry and plum notes stream through. Light violet, anise and cherry licorice accents fill in. I’ve been enjoying this wine over the last few evenings. It’s a superb expression of a very fine year in the Douro, the 2015 from Quinta da Romaneira. I have no idea why this vintage wasn’t widely declared. Romaneira is a spectacular, well situated property in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro, and it has been revitalised by a team headed up by Christian Seely. Deep coloured, this young vintage port has a highly floral nose with sweet blackberry jam and black cherry fruit. The palate is powerful and focused with sweet, intense, yet elegant black fruits. There’s a slight saltiness and some tarry, spicy detail, but overall this is a sort of Burgundian expression of Vintage Port, aiming at elegance yet not sacrificing longevity. 95/100 Drinking range: 2017 - Rating: 95 Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com (Sept 2017)

The 2015 Vintage Port is mostly Touriga Nacional, with 20% Touriga Franca and 10% Tinto Cão. It comes in with 109 grams per liter of residual sugar and was aged in oak vats for 24 moths. This was a tank sample when seen but out of barrel and awaiting bottling as the final blend. Christian Seely declared the 2015 vintage here, saying that the winery from time to time obtains "from two parcels of old vine Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, Ports of outstanding quality that merit a declaration. The last time this happened was in 2011." Lush and relatively rich for a 2015, this has good concentration and a palate-coating feel. It is packed with fruit and a touch sweet on the edge, but it's a bit less impressive in terms of structure. However, it may be that its mid-palate is just soaking up the power at the moment. Let's see how this shakes off its baby fat and comes along. It is always going to be pretty tasty, though. It should be approachable young and hold well for several decades, at the least. Quinta da Romaneira

Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.

85ha of vineyard, stretching some 3km along the River Douro are planted with both traditional Douro grapes and some plantings of international varieties.

Of course, this being the Douro valley, Quinta da Romaneira produce some very high quality Ports, but the forward focus of the estate is to realise the potential for table wine. In the words of Christian Seely, "our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
