Carlo Ferrini's 2020 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese opens to a beautiful ruby hue and an elegantly lean appearance. The wine delivers tart cherry fruit, cassis, blue flower, iron ore and orange peel. These various layers come together with balanced intensity. This vintage shows enormous elegance and tannins that melt onto the palate slowly and with lasting flavors. A medium-bodied, very tight and precise red with focused, firm tannins framing sleek layers of cranberries, blackberries, stones, slate and tobacco. Hints of dried fruit. too. Mineral and stony. Love this wine, packed with soured cherry, freshly cut herbs, sage spices, gunsmoke reduction and overall just mouthwateringly moreish. Barely-there jewel-ruby in colour, yet the concentration on the palate is striking, performing the brilliant trick that only certain grape varieties can manage. Located on Etna, but bottles under Sicilia Rosso (the same family has an estate over in Montalcino but bottles under Tuscany, clearly likes to have as few rules as possible...). Cola, tobacco, cinnamon and baked cherries. Freshness and lift straight away, super fresh with a juicy succulence that is so inviting. A clean palate with a gentle driving of flavour. Feels well worked with finesse. Balanced with so much juicy goodness, lovely, velvety-textured tannins and sweet strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit on the palate. Excellent expansion too with time in the glass. This has power for sure, depth and strength. One to age. Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.

Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.
