Quite potent! This tastes deliberately rich and opulent with an undertow of Granny Smith apples. Pure pleasure … A nice savoury note on the end. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2023)

One of the undiscovered gems of our range, this Viré-Clessé Quintaine is a deep, powerful southern Burgundy. Viré Clessé is a sub-appellation in the northern Mâconnais that broke away from the main Mâcon-Villages designation in 1998 because growers decided that they were better than the rest, which in general they are. This unfurls in the glass with aromas of natural honey, peaches and toasted nuts with a floral perfume of jasmine and a touch of aniseed. Broad, ripe and vivacious, this wine has an undercurrent of purity and elegance that gives balance to its complexity and richness.L&S (Sept 2023)

The 2020 Viré-Clessé Quintainé Cuvée E.J. Thevenet was matured in epoxy-lined vats to regulate the temperate and oxygen ingress. The alcoholic fermentation finished around the beginning of summer. What a beautiful nose: dried honey, dandelion and a touch of lanolin coming through with time. This is very pure. The palate is slightly viscous on the entry, with admirable weight, a little waxiness and touches of ginger and curry leaf towards the complex finish. Recommended. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2024)

Domaine Émilian Gillet

Jean Thévenet is a legend in these parts and thankfully still pops up whenever we visit the cellar to taste. However it is Gautier, his son who has been running the domaine now for some time. The handover of knowledge and practices has been complete and the domaine continues to blaze a trail. The wines are fabulous, hand-crafted beauties, with extraordinary texture, complexity and impact. The Thevenet family continue to conjure up magic here in this corner of the Maconnais. From old vines the comes impeccable fruit - some picked quite late in the season - it then undergoes very long slow fermentations that gentlly bubble on for weeks and it is this controlled approach which brings so much to the wines. These are esoteric but not odd - just fantastically enjoyable drinking that punch well above their weight.
