The white Domaine is a charming wine with notes of white fruit and citrus. Though totally dry, its roundness makes it pleasant in its youth. Quantity is limited. From several plots on clay and limestone coteaux. Manually harvested with a long slow fermentation in large oak barrels of 500Ltrs, until the wine is dry (less than 2 grams of residual sugar). The entry-level 2022 (apart from Les Granges I suppose) was tasted from bottle. When I tasted this last year it really blew me away with its exuberant 2022 character, so I was taken aback by the surprisingly traditional aromatic profile it now displays, with ripe red cherry, dried rose petal and liquorice. The palate follows the 2022 blueprint a little more closely though, seducing with the voluptuous character of the vintage, polished and round, generous but in possession of a good grip underneath it all. Lots of dry and bitter grip at the end as well, not to mention nice acidity, all of which adds some frame to it. More structure than expected, but on the lighter side for the vintage; I suspect some Chinon-drinkers will be happy with that. The alcohol on the label is 12.5%. Domaine Bernard Baudry
Bernard Baudry was born into a Chinon winemaking family in Cravant-les-Côteaux, Loire. Having studied oenology in Beaune, he started making his own wines in 1982, with only two hectares of vines. Today the estate is made up of 30 hectares, from six different sites, all of which are worked without the use of artificial herbicides or pesticides. His wines reflect the great versatility of Cabernet Franc when grown on different sites and are very much 'terroir' driven. Matthieu, his son has been working with Bernard since 2000 and now does most of the wine-making - the tradition continues. Beautiful wines, purely made, crisp and juicy Cabernet Franc.
