Felton Road owns some of the oldest vineyards in the region, dating back to the 1990s, and is part-owned by Englishman Nigel Greening. Its near-cult status is due to pinots like this – inky purple and super-smooth, rich with ripe blackberries and a seam of chocolate, with a dash of woody herbs, especially thyme. Organic, too. Deserves a fine steak. Susy Atkins, The Telegraph (Jul 2024)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Bannockburn is pure, refined and lifted with a silky, smooth texture that caresses the mouth despite being shy of mid-weight. Sweet raspberry and cherry meet a finely tuned herby character. It's all well-judged with excellent tannin handling, leaving the mouth coated with the finest appetizing textures that'll have you licking the insides of your cheeks. This 2022 is delectable from the off and will be for the first ten years of its life. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 91 Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous.com (May 2024)

Deep colour. Fruit sits firmly in the blue spectrum; bilberry and damson plum. Some dried thyme too. Opulent, fruit saturated flavours are silky and ripe at first then tannins sweep in to give a fine powdery veneer across the palate. Lacks the layered complexity of the single vineyard pinots but instead is a delightful expression of pinot, that will be approachable in the medium term. Drinking range: 2025 - 2030 Rating: ***** 95 Jane Skilton MW, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)

Lovely seductive aromas of perfectly ripe strawberries with fresh flowers and orange. Medium body, very fine with orange peel and cherries as well as stone and hints of bark. Already delicious. A blend of their four vineyards. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2023)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
