Super expressive nose of red fruit and flowers, with a creamier sort of sweetness to it. A touch of minty freshness too. Then there’s an almost savoury frame to creamy, sweet fruit. Intensity and drive in abundance again. Charming, as you would expect. L&S (Dec 2023)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunches. This comes across as a little rustic on the nose; it just lacks the freshness and vitality of the other Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins and fine grip, a little savory in style with a soft landing on the finish. Not bad, though this is a cuvée that, for me, never quite matches the quality of its peers. Drinking range: 2026 - 2036 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2024)
From 50+ year old vines; 60% whole cluster. Here too the wood treatment is subtle and easily allows the perfumed aromas of poached plum, spice and pretty floral nuances to be appreciated. The sleek, seductive and fleshy medium weight flavors are shaped by fine but dense tannins on the youthfully austere, dusty and balanced finale that could also use better depth. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2024)
A fresh vivid purple, backward in bouquet, with a fresh raspberry and some strawberry on the palate, a little less energy than the Cheseaux, but attractive and accessible with balanced supple tannins at the finish. 80% whole bunch vinification. Drinking range: 2029 - 2035 Rating: *** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2023)
Domaine Lignier-Michelot
A domaine now of 13.5 hectares, some owned, some in fermage with a little bought in. An average of 290 barrels a year. 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.
In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis, so it's lutte raisonnée.
The wines are made with the least intervention possible, with lots of whole bunches. little extraction (one or two pigeages but mostly he's into remontages, then aged in barrel with 15-20% new wood. They have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
