2016 Giodo Brunello Pre-Shipment Offer
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
<p><i>'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza'</i> is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.</p> <p>Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico <i>Consorzio</i> and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.</p> <p>Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all selected for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.</p> <p>The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. The vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.</p>

2016 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
75cl bottles, wood case of 6
Mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury, minerally cherry fruit with a suggestion of stalks and notes of new oak. Still very closed and embryonic on the nose. Super-elegant sour-cherry fruit that endsMid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury, minerally cherry fruit with a suggestion of stalks and notes of new oak. Still very closed and embryonic on the nose. Super-elegant sour-cherry fruit that ends much less tart than at the first taste. Just a touch of creaminess and lots of freshness and finely grained tannins. Rather the opposite of the powerful Brunello style that once was the rule in this region. A little mouth-watering on the finish, which leans quite heavily on the sweet but super-charming oak frame. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Mar 2021)

Alberelli di Giodo
<p>Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.</p><p> Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.</p>

Carlo Ferrini's Alberelli di Giodo is a newish reality on Etna that presented its first vintage in 2016, following years of Etna winemaking experience by this celebrated Tuscan consultant. He now hasCarlo Ferrini's Alberelli di Giodo is a newish reality on Etna that presented its first vintage in 2016, following years of Etna winemaking experience by this celebrated Tuscan consultant. He now has the 2017 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese on the market. This is an extremely elegant and expressive interpretation of Nerello Mascalese with lots of crisp energy and lively freshness. Obtaining this level of vigor is not always easy with this finicky grape, but Carlo nails it. His wine is supported by an extremely fine and silky texture, and the bouquet is impeccably clean and pure. There is a drying mineral note that reminds you of its volcanic roots and recalls the 2017 vintage heat. The vines are 80 years old and planted at 950 meters in elevation. This is Carlo's only Etna wine (for now) and he makes 7,200 bottles. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030L&S (Oct 2021)
