Olivier Krug knows 1988 intimately, having worked the full harvest at Krug, visiting all the growers and vineyards with the chef de cave. ‘There was a debate about 1988 in the early 1990s, because it was so shy compared with 1989, which was so clearly a vintage year,’ he recalls ‘In that era, ripeness and body were valued more highly than the character of the year. And so 1979, 1981 and 1988 were not considered strong vintage years at the time.’ How opinions change! ‘1988 is perhaps the best vintage in 40 years for some houses,’ he says today. Hindsight has confirmed 1988 as one of the most spectacular and enduring harvests of the decade, charged with the longevity of the slow maturation of a mild summer, described by Eric Lebel as timid initially, with beauty drawn out by time’s precious influence. It was first released a year after the 1989, and will be re-released as Krug Collection when it is ultimately deemed sufficiently mature.
Krug 1988 epitomises the focused tension of this long-enduring vintage, charged with life and huge potential yet. It sets forth with spellbinding purity and succulent precision of mango and peach, opulently supported by layers of truffle, fig and wonderfully spicy pipe smoke. Long age has caressed it into silky softness and wild honey succulence that strike a triumphant harmony with its energetic tension. An ethereal old Krug of spellbinding integrity, line and length. This bottle was beautifully fresh and pristine, and Olivier typically finds more buttery roundness in average bottles.

The 1988 Krug makes for a fabulous start. Tasted from a perfect bottle, the 1988 remains bright and focused, with all of the energy of this great vintage very much on display. Time has naturally softened some of the contours and added a good bit of nuance, but the 1988 Krug remains a Champagne of crystalline precision. I loved it. 'Brilliant aromas of coconut, tropical fruit, candied citrus peel and spring blossoms hint at perfection, yet the structure is firm and unyielding. Then it all returns on the finish, a wave of fresh and dried berries, white truffle and hazelnut.' 99/100 Wine SpectatorThe Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Mar 2005)
(note reprinted from Issue 93) Ineffable yeast autolysis aromas (biscuit, meal, nuts) virtually resist characterization; reminded me of a great Chevalier-Montrachet. A wine of extraordinary depth of flavor, vinosity and class, thanks to penetrating but perfectly harmonious, lipsmacking acidity. Quite dry but with wonderfully ripe fruit. Very firm and youthful on the finish, but already displays explosive flavor. A great vintage for Krug. Rating: 96 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Nov 2001)
Krug
The grandest of the Grande Marques. Johann-Joseph Krug, who was born in Mainz, founded Champagne Krug in 1843, having previously worked at Jacquesson and marrying Adolphe Jacquesson's sister-in-law. The Company is still controlled by the Krug family - Olivier Krug being the current incumbent - although ownership was sold to LVMH in 1999. Krug are the only House to barrel ferment all their wines - in "de-seasoned" 205 litre casks of Argonne oak. The rich Krug style also comes from prolonged lees ageing and the very high proportion of reserve wines in the blend.
