CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE
2006 Pomerol

Origin | France, Bordeaux |
Sub-district | Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol |
Village | Pomerol |
ABV | 14% |
Fine and floral, expressive, very fresh, mid-weight, not overripe - possibly the reverse: taut yet flowing. Blackcurrant, redcurrant. Not really lifted or mineral, it does not quite take off? Slightly leafy and slightly stalky tannins. Others seemed to have liked this more than me, so maybe the day? Rating: 90+? L&S (Apr 2007)

Firm strict tannins, clear salinity on the finish coupled with dark berry fruits of cassis and bilberry. Tight on the finish, with curls of violet flowers, full of character and finesse. Just 200 bottles and one magnum left at the estate. 80% new oak, 20% one year barrel, 42hl/h yield. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2021)
The 2006 La Conseillante has a surprisingly rich and opulent bouquet that might lack complexity but goes for sheer hedonism. Mulberry, hints of fresh fig and prune, this is a La Conseillante that has avowed not to be outshone by the previous two vintages, though you can argue that it accomplishes that in rather obvious fashion. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. There is plenty of truffle tinged red fruit and an engaging rounded texture, but now it is beginning to lose its complexity and it feels just a tad monotonous against the splendid 2005. Tasted at La Conseillante vertical at the property. Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)
The 2006 Château La Conseillante had perhaps the most show-stopping bouquet out of all seventy-odd 2006s that I tasted at ten years. It explodes from the glass with raspberry coulis, kirsch, honey and marmalade, so much so that I am not sure if I would nail it as a Bordeaux, let alone a Pomerol! It is precocious and very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, plenty of black truffle, fine tannin and well-judged acidity. This is an opulent, decadent La Conseillante that is atypical of the vintage and yet you totally fall for its charms. What it might lack in subtlety, it makes up for in sheer charm. Drinking range: 2018 - 2035 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2016)
Château La Conseillante
Château la Conseillante’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the part that became Château l’Evangile whilst Catherine Conseillan took the other. In 1871 Château la Conseillante was bought by the Nicolas family who own it to this day. With only the addition of a small plot of vines in 2014, the estate has remained the same ever since. The 12ha of vineyard are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards border Petrus to the north, and one can gaze across l’Evangile and see the vines of Château Cheval Blanc. Indeed, a small part of la Conseillante’s vineyard strays across into St Emilion, but is included in the main Pomerol cuvée. Château la Conseillante is a well-executed balancing act marrying tradition with modernity, something exemplified by the new cellar that opened in 2012.
