The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Chezeaux comes from white clayey soils with a lot of hard limestone as the bedrock. This includes 80% whole cluster fruit. It has a refined and elegant bouquet with pressed rose petals infusing the scents of small red cherries, pomegranate and dried orange rind scents. This is perhaps more bashful than some of Virgile Lignier's other 2015s. The palate is very fresh and vivacious on the entry with commendable depth and energy. The mineral component comes through strongly here, the finish quite powerful and with superb tension all the way through to the finish. Super-bon (as they say in these parts). Drinking range: 2020 - 2038 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2016)

45-50% whole bunch. Supple, precise, juicy and in total harmony. Fruit is very much all there but never quite sweet - very crisp, precise. This, as the first of the Morey premiers crus in the tasting, is a class up in silky expressive brightness. Drinking range: 2020 - L&S (Nov 2016)
Rating: 17.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Feb 2017)
(vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright, full red. More complex and perfumed than the Charmes, with its raspberry and blueberry aromas lifted by brown spices (Lignier noted that the Charmes was more complex than this wine before the racking but is mute today). Quite tight and savory in the mouth, showing little in the way of early sweetness. Finishes firmly tannic and spicy. This premier cru will need patience. Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2017)
Domaine Lignier-Michelot
A domaine now of 13.5 hectares, some owned, some in fermage with a little bought in. An average of 290 barrels a year. 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.
In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis, so it's lutte raisonnée.
The wines are made with the least intervention possible, with lots of whole bunches. little extraction (one or two pigeages but mostly he's into remontages, then aged in barrel with 15-20% new wood. They have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
