CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

2019 Vieilles Vignes Ultra 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

80 year old vines. Surprisingly bold (for Chambolle), there's a tiny sweetness here, but it's all quite closed. Still the silky texture. Gourmand too - slowly revealing. There's richness, but so much more under that, for now restrained, but undoubtedly intense. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

(this limited two-barrel cuvée is crafted from 70+ year old vines that abut the Musigny climat of La Combe d'Orveau, which is a monopole of Domaine Jacques Prieur). Here too there is a whiff of herbal tea to the more floral-infused and even more restrained aromas of cool, pure and elegant red cherry, spice and rose petal. The medium weight flavors also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel and while they don’t possess quite the same level of complexity, the strikingly long finish is even finer. This too is terrific and offers much to like. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau "Cuvée Ultra" is also full of promise, exhibiting lovely aromas of rose petals, blood orange, cherries, raspberries, exotic spices and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, perfumed and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with exquisitely refined tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The Cuvée Ultra coming from the core of the vineyard and vines which are probably over 90 years old delivers a gorgeous rich purple colour. There follows a luxurious, but superbly balanced bouquet of darkly ripe fruit with a marvellous energy. This shows more purity today than La Richemone and almost as much intensity. Grand cru persistence as well, of course. “Concentration with discretion” says Christophe. Tasted: November 2020 5/5 stars Rating: 96-99 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

From the bottom bit that touches Musigny. Cask sample. Deep crimson. Nose rather underwhelming but may simply be subtle. Then juicy fruit. Needs quite a bit of time, methinks. Elegant fly-away fruit. A little cool on the end. Drinking range: 2028 - 2044 Rating: 17+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau "Cuvée Ultra" has a more savory bouquet that Christophe Perrot-Minot’s other cuvées, the stem addition needing more time to be fully subsumed into the fruit. Forest floor and touches of game filter through. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, much more ferrous in style compared to the La Richemone that preceded it, with maybe just a little more austerity and grip on the finish. This will need time. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
