Simply delicious Bordeaux from the talented young Mathieu Ternault. A recent visit reminded us of the immense quality of the work he is doing here at this well placed family estate. As we stood in front of the winery looking out over the neighbouring properties like Cheval Blanc, VCC and Chateau Petrus who are just over the Barbanne stream, it really brought home the outstanding position of the Montaiguillon vineyards and when you taste this Merlot heavy Claret the quality is clear. Tasting against far greater names this is a standout bargain - elegant, with a lovely weight of fruit - but high toned and very true - this hits all the right notes. A sadly all too rare bargain for this part of the world - this will not disappoint. L&S (Aug 2023)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2020 Montaiguillon is a soft, easygoing Montagne Saint-Émilion to drink now and over the next few years, while the bright red-toned fruit, spice and floral notes remain vibrant. This mid-weight 2020 is nicely done. Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 86 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Montaiguillon still feels suppressed and rather reduced on the nose, disallowing the fruit to express itself. The palate is sweet and ripe on the entry, quite fine tannins, but there is a touch of underlying greenness towards the finish, though to the degree that it could be absorbed with time. Give it 2-3 years in a damp cellar. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Montaiguillon is a rich, heady wine loaded with inky red fruit, vanillin and sweet oak. In an especially flamboyant style, but the elements are nicely balanced. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 86-88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

Château Montaiguillon

A well regarded 28ha property on the borders of St Georges-St Emilion owned by the Amart family since 1949 and run for the last 20 years by the charming Chantal. Michel Rolland advises.
