BEAUNE
2021 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Domaine Joseph Drouhin
This is so creamy, both generous and elegant, with aromas of lemons, blanched almonds, white pepper, white grapefruit, peaches and cream. Full-bodied, long and persistent, with deliciously ripe fruit. Fantastic concentration. Drink or hold. Rating: 96 Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com (Aug 2023)

There is a vague whiff of the exotic lurking in the background of the slightly sweet nose of white peach and lychee along with a floral hint. The succulent, round and very rich flavors are generous but not really opulent while delivering fine punch on the lightly stony, clean, dry and citrusy finale. This impressively persistent and wellbalanced effort could use better depth but the Drouhin Clos des Mouches has an impeccable aging track record. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2023)
The 2021 vintage celebrates the 100th year since Maurice Drouhin purchased the family's first parcel of Clos des Mouches. And what a graceful, balletic Clos des Mouches Blanc it is. Yellow apple, sweet spice, nectarine and warm hay create an elegant, youthful profile. There is notably good depth here for the cool vintage, and the lovely, vinous mid-palate is nicely contrasted by the chalky, saline finish. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 94 *** Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2023)
The 2021 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru is a worthy sideman to the Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot. Lovely citrus peel and crushed limestone scents, this has vigour and focus. The palate is well balanced with a taut line of acidity, tensile yet with ample concentration on the finish. This is certainly worth hunting down. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)
I was fortunate to be able to taste this wine as there were almost no grapes at all, yielding between 2 and 5 hl/ha. A little more yellow, a light primrose colour. An attractive vibrant fresh fruit with a few citrus notes, even some orange blossom. Good depth here, with a soft oakiness. The 2021 vintage of Clos des Mouches will be ready relatively soon. Drinking range: 2025 - 2029 Rating: 90-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Dec 2022)
Domaine Joseph Drouhin
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.
A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm
Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.
For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
