DAMASCENE

2021 Syrah Cederberg

Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin South Africa, Western Cape
Village Cederberg
ABV 13.5%

Exceptionally impressive with floral and herbal notes, the 2021 Cederberg Syrah offers a kiss of reduction that keeps the expression in a tight frame. Medium-bodied, it has a firmness to the palate that will need some additional time to come around to loosen its grip. If you drink it young, enjoy it with food, and I recommend decanting it at least one hour before consuming it. It’s an absolutely impressive Syrah that exudes a sense of place with varietal character. I see where this is headed, and your patience will be rewarded. Bravo! Rating: 95 Anthony Mueller, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)

Picked last of Damascene's trio of top Syrahs, this dense, compact, almost Cornas-like red is serious, focused and built for the long haul. Taut, shuttered and ferrous, it has grippy tannins, the freshness that comes from a site at 940 metres, stony minerality, sinewy tannins and the backbone and understated power to age beautifully in bottle. Drinking range: 2025 - 2032 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Sept 2023)

80% submerged cap. Lovely perfume with a lively grippy palate that shows firm tannins with some peppery notes as well as intense raspberry and cherry fruit. Big but still elegant with keen acidity. Lots of concentration and potential for development. 95/100 (JG) Rating: 95 Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com (Sept 2023)

Damascene

Damascene is a seriously exciting new find for us in South Africa. Their maiden vintage here was 2018 and we were blown away by the results. 2019, their second vintage was sold out on release, read the press release HERE.

The highly acclaimed Jean Smit, previously winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, has teamed up with David Curl, former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby.

Their goal is to explore all across the South African winelands in search of exceptional sites. Sites that deliver an important moment of insight, and hence the name of the project. A Damascene moment of clarity, where we can all understand the greatness of these small, prized plots.

The vineyards are old and well established but small, so each of these brilliant wines is only released in very small quantities. We urge you to catch them while you can.

This wine isn't currently part of a mixed case, but you can always browse our full selection of mixed cases here.
