GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2021 1er Cru Cazetiers Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Cask sample tasted after the Lavaux St Jacques - this is tighter and brighter with good intensity up front and some breadth too. The fruit though surprises with a level of ripeness, a sweetness that seems a little out of kilter. The feel to the core is almost plush - which is intriguing in the vintage - but a darker, more serious line emerges on the back end as things tighten up. This seems to need a moment to get together - and is certainly full of potential.L&S (Nov 2022)

Alluring for its exotic spice aromas and strawberry, cherry and floral flavors, this silky, inviting red is balanced, with vanilla and toasty oak notes lingering on the aftertaste. Approachable now, this should improve in the next year or two. Drink now through 2032. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2023)

Sunnier compared to the Lavaux St-Jacques and with deeper soils, this is enticingly open and giving now. Plums, toast and potpourri spice pour onto the dense palate. It is more finessed and less demanding in grippiness than in warmer, riper years. Rating: 95 *** Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2023)

(from a huge 3.96 ha parcel). There is better layering and much more sauvage character present on the smoky nose of wild dark currant, game and a whiff of herbal tea. The medium weight plus flavors possess a beguiling texture along with a pronounced minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately austere finale that displays notably better depth and persistence. Very good quality here. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is a well-defined but less harmonious bouquet than the Lavaux, brambly red fruit, autumn leaves and light black pepper scents. It has a persuasive airiness about it. The palate is well balanced with sour cherry on the entry, brittle tannins, attenuating a little towards the finish where it just lacks the flesh of the Lavaux. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Cask sample. Some mossiness on the nose and sweetness on the palate – a bit looser and less structured than some. Not as precise at the moment. Drinking range: 2026 - 2036 Rating: 16+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2022)

Bright vibrant purple, this is exuberant, wearing its heart on its sleeve. On the richer side, I was thinking possible 14% but Erwan confirms 13.5%. It has retained all its balance, and can offer a very pretty long juicy cherry finish. Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2022)

A slightly deeper crimson colour. The bouquet is quite backward but with some peppery notes and fresh red fruit. More power on the palate, again with its usual mineral thread, in this case a salty touch. Really quite persistent, and still very backward. Drinking range: 2028 - 2033 Rating: **** 92-95 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2022)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
