MAZIS CHAMBERTIN
2021 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley
The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a touch of reduction but there is more complexity vis-a-vis the Latricières, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and pressed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well balanced, a liberal sprinkling of black pepper with a nicely focused and quite structured finish (for the vintage). Very fine. Possibly the most fun of the reds here to taste at this early stage from cask. Balance between the bright zip and the underlying power is great. Red berries and deeper, darker juice are measured well with some savour and hedgerow aromatics. There is a nice tension here, with fine grained grip and good push too - one for the cellar and to consider in about 10 years time, at least.L&S (Nov 2022)
Cherry, boysenberry and floral flavors are the main themes, along with an earthy, feral note, shaded by sandalwood and sweet oak spices. This red is taut and linear as it plays out on the compact finish, and though difficult to see where it's going, this is intense and long. Best from 2026 through 2045. Drinking range: 2026 - 2045 Rating: 95 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2023)
For Flous, this is the wine to age. It is big-boned and dense for sure. Yet its tannins are so refined, especially among Mazis, that it feels rather accessible. Still, it would be a shame to miss what this grand cuvée will offer. Today there is tobacco, savory spice, wild cherries and mulberries. Faiveley has five parcels here that add up to just over 1.5 ha. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 96 *** Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2023)
(from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the two parcels total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A touch of green tea character sits atop the aromas of plum, cherry and more prominent sauvage nuances. There is a really lovely mouthfeel to the suave, round and powerful medium-bodied flavors that also display evident minerality on the slightly more complex but noticeably more persistent finale. At least some patience will be necessary as this is quite tightly wound. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)

Cask sample. Meaty, heady nose. Sweet start and then refined, quite marked tannins and useful freshness. Should make impressive old bones. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2022)
Erwan loves the Mazis this year. The colour is a full mid purple. The nose is a little bit more blockbuster, and certainly the palate offers a stunning raft of fruit built around a very controlled structure. This is a wine for the long term. Rating: 94-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2022)
A palish mid crimson. The nose was slow to come out but soon a fair volume of strawberry fruit begins to emerge, suggesting a depth of fruit behind. More alpine strawberry and pinpoint raspberry, then more tannins and a very peppery finish with good persistence of the little red fruits. This could be in brooding mode, and deserve more in due course. Drinking range: 2029 - 2038 Rating: *** 92-95 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2022)
