MEURSAULT
2021 1er Cru Perrières Domaine Henri Germain
Just the one barrel, sadly. Not giving much away on the nose, but the palate shows a more forceful wine than the Charmes, a slightly sweeter edge, power restrained. Not really speaking as yet; there's a bit of warmth and spice - a sense of lovely balance, texture, length - but it is yet to become chatty. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040L&S (Oct 2022)

(from a .12 ha parcel that produced only 1 barrel in 2021). As is often the case, this possesses the prettiest nose in the range with its intensely floral nose of rose petal, acacia blossom, spice and cool sliced green apple. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense medium weight flavors possess a highly sophisticated mouthfeel as well as an abundance of minerality that seems to build in prominence on the powerful, focused, chiseled and superbly persistent finale. This is a ‘wow’ wine and highly recommended. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2023)
A clear bright yellow. Just one barrel made from 0.16ha. This is more backward, more difficult to assess, plenty of fruit clearly, with quite high acidity. Certainly not in place now and hard to judge if it will achieve the same imperturbable balance of most of the wines in this line up. Pretty concentrated for all that. Drinking range: 2027 - 2032 Rating: 91-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Dec 2022)
Domaine Henri Germain
Jean-François Germain was joined in 2018 by his daughter Lucie - who is now helping to run this small (7ha) domaine.
The Chassagne vineyards came through his mother, a Pillot, and Jean-François is married to François Jobard's daughter, so they are quite intertwined with some of our other producers. The Poruzots comes from the rows next to Remi Jobard's. In terms of winemaking the Germains are always happy to let nature take its course, and in the vineyards they follow as natural a system of viticulture as possible (organic, not certified).
These are concentrated, tightly wound wines from one of Burgundy's coldest cellars. Alcoholic fermentations can take months and the malolactics are often late, so they have always gone for long élevage in old barrels, always for two winters, and the Premiers Crus usually for 22 months. Slow to develop, they show wonderful crystalline purity. New wood is used very sparingly, just to replace barrels sold when they get to ten years old.
Please note that certain wines are on very tight allocations and will first be offered to customers who buy across the range. If you have any queries, please email our primeurs team or speak to your usual L&S contact. Please feel free to email us at any time.
