8 barrels instead of the 20 they make when 'at cruising speed'. Good depth and lots of concentrated volume here - a real step up to Premier Cru level, however good the Colombière is. A little florality and spice, but like the others this is still reserved. Drinking range: 2027 - 2037 L&S (Oct 2022)

Slightly more giving than Les Vignes Rondes at 15 hl/ha, the Mugneret sisters accidentally chose a cuvée slightly too large. So despite not being into the whole cluster philosophy – especially in a cool vintage, in went 15% whole cluster. Marie-Andrée was relieved that they had plenty of ripe stems. The vendange entière really pops on the nose with a hurricane of bramble and sweet spice – truly beguiling. The 45% new oak is remarkably integrated, showing complementary aromas of chocolate fondant. Smooth and rich with minerally back palate lift, this one-time expression is not to be missed. (15% whole clusters). A gentle touch of wood sets off the pure, ripe and enticingly spicy nose of red and dark berries, earth and a subtle floral influence from the whole clusters. There is good concentration to the supple, round and delicious middleweight flavors where the supporting structure is firm but integrated, all wrapped in a dusty, lightly austere, beautifully well-balanced and impressively long finish. I very much like the complexity and this beauty should age effortlessly over the mid to even longer-term. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru was cropped at 17hL/ha with around 50% new oak. It has an exquisite, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, peony and wilted roses, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, an almost citric line of acidity with a tensile, linear yet compelling finish. Wonderful. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
