RICHEBOURG

2021 Grand Cru Domaine Anne Gros

EN PRIMEUR

Well, it's a Richebourg alright - big and calm, it has a slow-moving feel which is never heavy - but still waters run deep. There's fruit richness, spice and complexity - but above all, there's confident calmness. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045L&S (Oct 2022)

75cl bottles (case of 3)

(from a .6 ha parcel). A highly spiced and exuberantly fresh nose freely reveals its aromas of essence of red berries, sandalwood, clove, crushed fennel and exotic tea. There is a big step up in volume to the noticeably denser largerscaled flavors that exhibit very good power and minerality on the balanced, moderately austere and impressively long finish. This is already displaying much better than average depth and this is also quite good. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru has a beautifully-defined bouquet, dark berries with lots of undergrowth, light shaved black truffle aromas. The mineralité shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, crisp and quite linear for a Richebourg. Though not persistent as recent vintages, it maintains superb focus with a residual white pepper tinged aftertaste. Excellent. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Paler colour than the Echezeaux with a very expressive nose. 50 whole bunch vinification for both wines. Despite the lighter start there is an enormous weight in the middle, then a gentler finish. Lovely lush strawberry and raspberry fruit with a floral touch. Properly long finish. Drinking range: 2030 - 2036 Rating: 92-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Dec 2022)

Always darker in colour and always healthy. More of a deep crimson than a light purple. The bouquet is much less forthcoming, not having the sensuality of the other appellations. A fresh raspberry fruit with stricter structure, though the tannins are adequately ripe. There is some density at the back, but this wine will take time to show itself fully. Drinking range: 2028 - 2036 Rating: *** 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2022)

Anne Gros joined her father François at the family domaine in Vosne Romanée in 1988, having given up her arts studies in favour of viticulture and oenology at Beaune and Dijon, and has run the domaine alone since 1995. The Domaine now has 6.5 hectares of Pinot and Chardonnay. Anne describes herself as being 'wary of certainties and keen to preserve her freedom'.

In the vineyards Anne practises viticulture influenced by organic and biodynamic principles, and the vineyards are ploughed and fertilised with compost, but although she believes that the long-term health of the vineyards are best preserved by such methods, she likes to maintain the freedom to use conventional treatments when necessary.

In the cellar, the wines are classically made, in cement tanks for the reds, and stainless steel for the whites. They are then are aged in barrel for up to fifteen months, with 80% new wood for the grand crus, 50% for the village wines and 30% for the regional wines. Anne is quietly meticulous and almost obsessive about cleanliness in her cellar, which perhaps is reflected in the delicacy and restrained tension in her wines, which have aromatic clarity, limpid precision, sheer joie de vivre, lively balance and persistence.
