Firm and taut, but the richness overcomes any slight astringency. Spicy depth - sweet dark spices - the class is here, even if this too is on the back foot for now. Drinking range: 2030 - 2040 L&S (Nov 2022)

(from 55+ year old vines). A gorgeously layered nose freely reveals its decidedly cool aromas of plum, spice, truffle and various dark berries. There is terrific intensity to the rich, sappy and mineral-driven medium weight flavors that display focused power on the dusty, balanced and chiseled finish. The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is limited to just two barrels because of the frost (there were six in the previous two years). This is partly because of degenerative rootstock that they attribute to a lack of potassium provided by water. It has a taut, linear, crushed rock and raspberry scents bouquet that gradually unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, lightly spiced, hints of white pepper and sage that dovetail into quite a gourmand finish. Complex, focused and very persistent, this should evolve into a very fine Ruchottes. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)
Two barrels made, one of them new. Not just frost but degenerate vines (though planted in 2000), now bouncing back. The colour is a medium deep crimson, but the nose exquisite, all red fruit, some strawberry notes. Spicy at the finish, a little less ripe here (and apparently that is always the case) but with good length. Definitely all red fruit. Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg
Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.
On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.
The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.- For full delivery details see our Delivery page.
