Vineyard Gravains

A new addition, a vineyard they have bought from a vigneron who was retiring. Planted in 1976. It's between Lavières and Serpentières and faces due south. The combe de Bouillon brings a night time freshness - they are very happy with the site. Quite a deep colour, certainly ripe, it's got a sleek dark berry fruit and saline lift - surprisingly dark in the vintage - really excellent. four barrels in 2021, nine in 2022, they hope to make ten. Drinking range: 2024 - 2028 L&S (Oct 2022)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

(from a .57 ha parcel; Germain noted that there was no frost damage as they pruned it very late). A perfumed and very pretty nose reflects notes of plum, dark currant, violet and a touch of earth. There is excellent energy suffusing the beautifully detailed and lightly stony middleweight flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, sneaky long and balanced finale. As is usually the case with a typical Gravains, this classically styled effort will need at least a few years of cellaring to unwind. Drinking range: 2023 - 2029 Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2023)

A new vineyard in the line-up. Bought at the end of March and pruned early April so not frosted. 1976 planting. A sound mid crimson purple with plenty of dark fruit weight on the nose. Plenty of energy, even a floral note, weightier and more tannins than the Clos des Mouches. Drinking range: 2025 - 2029 Rating: 89-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Dec 2022)

Domaine Henri Germain

Jean-François Germain was joined in 2018 by his daughter Lucie - who is now helping to run this small (7ha) domaine.

The Chassagne vineyards came through his mother, a Pillot, and Jean-François is married to François Jobard's daughter, so they are quite intertwined with some of our other producers. The Poruzots comes from the rows next to Remi Jobard's. In terms of winemaking the Germains are always happy to let nature take its course, and in the vineyards they follow as natural a system of viticulture as possible (organic, not certified).

These are concentrated, tightly wound wines from one of Burgundy's coldest cellars. Alcoholic fermentations can take months and the malolactics are often late, so they have always gone for long élevage in old barrels, always for two winters, and the Premiers Crus usually for 22 months. Slow to develop, they show wonderful crystalline purity. New wood is used very sparingly, just to replace barrels sold when they get to ten years old.
