VOUGEOT
2021 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots Domaine Christian Clerget
Silky weight of fine volume and supple tannins - delicacy and freshness, but it's all a bit grumpy and ungenerous at the moment, as we have found it can be early on - but it gets there. Justine just adds 'it's always like this, you really need to know how to wait'. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038L&S (Oct 2022)
75cl bottles (case of 6)

A moderately prominent herbal tea character is present on the otherwise spicy and cool nose of mostly red pinot fruit. The mid-palate impression of the delicious flavors is less concentrated but finer with excellent minerality on the moderately austere finale. This is a bit awkward today as the green tea character of the nose may well be more than some people would find attractive. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 87-90 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)
Limestone and clay soils, situated beneath the Château de Clos Vougeot between Le Clos Blanc and Musigny. 0.5 ha (1.2 acres). Cask sample. Mid cherry. Lovely floral nose, packed with roses. This is light, aerien with a long, lifted, mineral finish. Panache and lift. Very fine, almost playful. Pinot for true Burgundy fanciers. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 16.5+ Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2023)
Mid purple colour, while the nose is lightly reduced though it is easy to see the wine beneath. Always a reductive appellation chez Clerget, I am told. Fresh red berry fruit raspberry and redcurrant, a good strict line through the middle and some persistence. Also more Vougeot than Chambolle in style, whereas it is often the other way round Drinking range: 2026 - 2031 Rating: 91-93 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2022)
Domaine Christian Clerget
A domaine of 6 hectares, with 8 appellations, run by Christian, Isabelle and their daughter Justine Clerget from their house in the northern end of the little village of Vougeot, which is really in the commune of Chambolle. They have been organic (certified) since 2017, Justine having insisted on it when she joined them, but it sounds as though she was pushing at an open door, because Christian is entirely committed to this approach and clearly believes that good wine starts with the vines.
At harvest the grapes are picked into small cases for the short trip to the winery which really is right in the middle of their holdings. They adapt to the vintage conditions, so that they did 2 pigeages in total in 2019, whereas in 2017, they did one a day throughout the fermentation. In 2018 they did some whole bunch fermentation, but reverted to their normal complete destemming in 2019. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation Christian decants into tank, allows the wine to settle for ten days, then puts the wines into barrel where they stay without racking until bottling. They are using about 30% new wood on the villages and 40% on the Chambolle Charmes and the Échézeaux, and the wines say in barrel for a long élevage of 18-20 months.
