CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE
2023 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley
Cask sample. Mid garnet – rather dull colour actually. Rather sweaty nose and then complexity on the palate – complexity that is rare in 2023s at this stage. Quite a bit of chew and this is obviously a baby. Sweet and chewy and still just a collection of elements. This is very classy. Deep with beautiful concentration- but not too tight. Really good feel. Some dark edges will need patience and a cool dark cellar, but this has great detail and aromatics and proper smart lines and lift. All here just needs time to piece together properly.L&S (Nov 2024)
(from a 1.29 ha parcel). This is also firmly reduced and revealing nothing but a tinge of spiciness. Once again the caressing and seductive mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is striking thanks to the finegrained tannins that shape the wonderfully complex and impeccably well-balanced finale. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume that only adds to the appeal of this very classy effort. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2025)
The classic Clos de Bèze from Faiveley seemed lusher and more voluptuous than one might expect, with exuberant plum and blackberry fruit and suggestions of wood smoke, anise seed, and fresh peony. The texture was fleshy and dense, with the sweet fruit shining through on the palate. The grapes are from the domaine parcels in the centre of the vineyard that stretch the length of the slope (grands rangs) and the part nearest Chambertin just south of the Rousseau vines; they are fermented largely as whole clusters. Drinking range: 2030 - 2060 Rating: 96 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter.com (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru doesn't quite gel on the nose like the Mazis-Chambertin at first. It gradually combines hints of finely delineated brambly red fruit, tea leaves, briar and brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, considering this is a Grand Cru. This is a "transparent" Pinot with light grip but a long peppery tail on the finish. Give this four or five years in bottle. Drinking range: 2028 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2024)
A bright mid crimson purple. The nose has the class and much of the energy that one would hope for. The 2023 Chambertin Clos de Bèze is elegant with little alpine strawberries, but I would have liked just a point more concentration. Drinking range: 2032 - 2040 Rating: *** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2024)
Domaine Faiveley
The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côte de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
