CHARMES CHAMBERTIN

2023 Aux Charmes Grand Cru Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

EN PRIMEUR

Lots of millerandage here with smaller grapes adding good pep and lift to the whole. Thibault has used 70% Whole Bunch this year in the Charmes to further that fresh, spicy line here. PH is always a bit higher than other sites - so the stalks add freshness and an almost menthol note. Its very effective in 20123 and this is an absolute Charmer. Interestingly the stalks in fact add potassium to the juice. which raises pH lowering the acidity on paper. Yet it adds the feel and flavour of freshness. Thibault does not worry about the acid analysis - just the taste. And the taste is immaculate. Just broad and sexy enough - but not clumsy. There is the sensation of lift and neatly layered red berry and hedgerow flowers. The 'Aux Charmes' lieu-dit is near the road and highly prized parcel of Charmes Chambertin. You can see why with this delicious 2023. Very succesful L&S (Nov 2024)

(from Charmes proper). A discreet application of wood also sets off distinctly earthy aromas of both red and dark berries along with pretty floral nuances. The very generous, even plush, medium-bodied flavors also reflect evident power on the compact, firm and built-to-age finale. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru includes 60% whole cluster this year with the main part of the stem removed. This is perfumed and beautifully defined on the nose: red fruit mixes with wild hedgerow and light forest floor scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a little creaminess on the entry, fine acidity and touches of licorice. The harvest's warmth perhaps shapes the finish, and there is black pepper on the aftertaste. This has good potential but certainly leans toward the more concentrated side. Drinking range: 2028 - 2048 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2025)

50% whole bunches with the main stem removed. 100% new wood. Fine mid purple, a lively come-hither sort of nose with an array of red fruit, medium-bodied at first then gaining density behind even as the strawberries take on a darker hue. A little spice from the whole bunches, but finishes just slightly on the sombre side. Drinking range: 2030 - 2038 Rating: *** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2024)

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
