CORTON RENARDES
2023 Grand Cru Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs
Soil not deep here and an intriguing orange colour - containing lots of iron. It's Oxfordian limestone which is very old and not as active. Over the years Thibault has evolved what he does here and now works this Corton in a specific way. The results are super, if perhaps atypical for Corton Renardes. He achieves lots of floral notes - this is pretty thanks to a very, very gentle extraction. Fermentation is done now really as an infusion as the juice gives a lot without any encouragement. Renarde means fox - but this is because the wines can be more rustic here - blocky and broad. So Thibault's charming, flowing, Pinot Noir is a real delight. Sophisticated and lifted - clever stuff. A relatively bright and high-toned nose reflects plenty of spice notes on the aromas of various red and dark berries, in particular cherry and black raspberry, along with hints of menthol, earth and game. The supple and round larger-bodied flavors flash evident power on the complex, balanced and impressively long finale. This is already excellent with the development potential to match. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru has a more austere bouquet compared to other cuvées, leaning more toward black fruit but with fine mineralité from the yellow limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy entry and a saline finish, the 30% whole cluster neatly integrated. As you would expect, this is not quite as concentrated as the previous vintage, but it is still a very commendable Corton. Drinking range: 2027 - 2042 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2025)
A fine medium deep ruby purple with an exquisitely balanced nose, reproduced on the palate with a strawberry-raspberry mix and a touch of white pepper. Very graceful, medium density, long finish. Stylish Corton. Drinking range: 2029 - 2037 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2024)
Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs
The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
